Bad feelings about the "eDreymaR" Latam variants
Hello!
In xkb-data the latam symbols file contains two Colemak variants attributed to "eDreymaR". I wish that at least one of those would go away!
I am DreymaR, of some fame in the Colemak keyboard layout community. The offending variants are based on my work as seen among other places on my Big Bag pages and in the Big Bag implementation repos:
The Big Bag on locale "edition DreymaR" (eD) variants
(Yes, I'd love to start moving my XKB repo in here but unfortunately I haven't yet understood how to use the rules components correctly...)
The wrong name probably stems from hastily reading the old BigBag page which has "the eDreymaR way" in its title? I never used "eDreymaR" as a name for myself. It is theoretically possible that this layout variant's creator elected to name themself "eDreymaR", but in this case they should not be publishing work based so closely on mine as that's not cool.
"Locale variants ... the eDreymaR way" on the Colemak Forum
The first latam "eDreymaR" variant might be allowed to stay as it is, it isn't bad. But if so, the attribution must change from the incorrect "eDreymaR" to "DreymaR" (me as a person) or "edition DreymaR" (my name for the shift state layers I use with Colemak), preferably with a link to DreymaR's Big Bag of Keyboard Tricks included. Unless this contributor indeed does name themselves after me, in which case... smh.
The second "Colemak for gaming" variant is one I would never ever consent to having my name on! It is a horrible idea, an affront to ergonomic layout design, a misleading trap for newcomers and basically rotten cruft. Moving around the ASDF keys from an ergonomically optimized layout such as Colemak with the sole purpose of conserving the gaming ASDF arrow cross is bound to break the layout's purpose of being ergonomic which indeed is the case here. So you spend a lot of time learning a layout that is far less ergonomic than Colemak, and newcomers will fall for the trap and believe that you can have it both ways – like this variant's designer must've done in a fit of Dunning Kruger Syndrome.
I know and realize that open source software is bound to acquire cruft and bad content. But I hope this particular instance of it can be remedied somehow?
