Random freezes possibly linked to evince usage
I've been experiencing random freezes when using Evince, which aligns with the issue described in this AskUbuntu post. There are no relevant entries in the logs. While I'm uncertain if this problem is directly associated with Poppler, through trial and error, I discovered a correlation between the freezes and Evince usage.
Here's a summary of my troubleshooting steps:
- Initially, the random freezes occurred on Ubuntu 23.10 with the latest updates installed. I attempted to address the issue by disabling the Nvidia graphics card and Wi-Fi, but the problem persisted.
- Upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (not officially released) did not resolve the issue.
- I then performed a clean reinstallation of Ubuntu 23.10, preserving the home partition, but the freezes persisted.
- Switching to Fedora 39, preserving the home partition, did not alleviate the issue either.
Subsequently, I identified that the freezes consistently happened when using Evince. To explore potential alternatives, I tested Okular installed from RPM, but encountered the same freezing problem. However, after installing Evince as a Flatpak, my laptop has not experienced any freezes in the last 24 hours, indicating a potential resolution.
In the worst-case scenario, the freezes occurred within approximately 10 minutes, particularly when working on PDFs with numerous annotations generated using LaTeX (nothing special, just regular notes for classes). Unfortunately, I'm unable to provide the specific PDF that caused the freezes within 10 minutes as it's not publicly available. However, the issue persists across different PDFs, all of which are generated using LaTeX. I have not tested with other PDFs.
I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad 5 Pro-14ACN6 Laptop (Type 82L7) with Linux installed on an LVM encrypted partition.
I performed a memory test, and it did not show any errors.
I'm not sure where I should report this problem since I do not know exactly what's causing the issue. I reported it here as it seems the most appropriate place.
Edit: I experienced this issue on both Wayland and X11.
