Audio buffer x-runs when changing songs

system: Manjaro (currently updated) with i7, 32gb of RAM, all SSD hard drives.

Issue: When switching songs in any media player, the audio engine buffer x-runs regardless of buffer size, what else is going on in the background, and position of sunspots on the sun. It is made much worse when I am practicing bass using a simple rack in Carla (this requires Catia to be open to set the buffer lower) - usually 3-4 x-runs per song switch. Clementine is worse than VLC, have not tested other media players.

PW-top shows these are happening at the base ALSA level, not as a per-application error. The number of errors was the same at the ALSA layer as they were at the application. Applications all showed running at a buffer size of 256 when the most errors occured, but like I said, I can recreate this just by having VLC switch tracks and there's an audioble pop in my audio.buffer_xrun_with_audioplayer_1
