More doc cleanups, word choice, respectful coding

This is mostly just a documentation cleanup pass, even though it started as a "adjust to respectful coding guidelines" (renaming the dummy driver, etc), because I found a handy word list intended mainly for documentation writers https://developers.google.com/style/word-list and it pointed out some things that (while not offensive) are not very clear, etc.

Builds on !1300 (merged) because I'm pretty sure I added some of the unclear things in that MR.
