tests/gl_basic_test: rework and simplify

This should be the last rework, touch wood.

If cmocka grows an API for the following, we can consider dropping our local hacks.

• test suite with single setup/teardown - we can nuke the weird macro nesting with CREATE_TESTSUITE unit_test_make
• assert_ variants
