Minecraft: Random system panics / restarts on older versions of the game
System information:
- OS: Fedora 38
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900XT
- Kernel version: Linux fedora 6.4.4-200.fc38.x86_64 #1 (closed) SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Jul 19 16:32:49 UTC 2023 x86_64 GNU/Linux
- Mesa version: 23.1.3
- Xserver version (if applicable): 1.20.14 (I am on Wayland but Minecraft runs through XWayland)
- Desktop manager and compositor: Gnome and Mutter 44.3
Description:
While having really high framerates (up in the 2000 to 2500s) the game just randomly causes system panics / restarts. I was only able to reproduce this on versions below 1.13 while getting the best results on 1.8.9 with the Optifine Mod (https://optifine.net/home) and the Forge Mod Loader. The crash happens while resizing the window or while playing in general, both things randomly but really fast, only took about 1-2 minutes every time I tried to recreate it. While crashing I had both VBOs and Render Regions enabled in the settings (Optifine).
This crash does not seem to produce any error logs on the JVM or anything else I was able to search through (I am not the most experienced Linux user so I don't know all neat commands which could help debugging here).
I have tried debugging this issue by modifying the code of minecraft and optifine for multiple days now but I couldn't come to a proper conclusion of what exactly could cause this issue.
By System Panics I mean the complete PC just restarts without any Error Logs or anything else being produced (JVM Crashes or anything similar), it seems like something is trying to prevent anything bad happening to the system.
Regression:
Recently started using an AMD GPU so I cannot give any information on this, sorry!
Log files:
As explained above, I can't seem to extract any information from dmesg
, grep amdgpu
, JVM Core Dumps or anything similar. If you have any other instructions or commands which could help you identifying the issue I can surely do those.
