Draft: Set AWS region from ENV Variable AWS_DEFAULT_REGION

Looking for the environment variable AWS_DEFAULT_REGION and using it for signaling.

This is a quick, working fix. Anything that goes deeper into the underlying codebase is out of my league unfortunately. Happy for feedback.
