System crashes and reboots when i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin is present
- System architecture: x86_64
- Kernel version: latest drm-tip (6.5.0+)
- Linux distribution: Debian sid
- Machine: HP ProDesk 400 G5 Desktop Mini (Intel Core i5-9500T)
- Display connector: DP
-
/sys/class/drm/card0/error
is empty (No error state collected)
I first noticed this issue when installing Debian 12.1. The system works fine, but gives the following warning in dmesg:
- Failed to load DMC firmware i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin
So when installing firmware-misc-nonfree, this firmware file becomes available and is loaded correctly. Unfortunately, this leads to the system crashing every few minutes.
I have narrowed it down to the following situation:
- When firmware-misc-nonfree is installed, but I delete or rename /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin, the system no longer crashes
- With i915/kbl_dmc_ver1_04.bin present and a monitor being connected and turned on, the system no longer crashes
- dmesg shows no relevant entry whatsoever, enabling kernel crash dumps crashes the system, but it does not reboot, also no entry in /var/crash
Next, I installed Debian sid (Kernel 6.4.0 currently) which showed the same symptoms. On top of Debian sid I have built latest drm-tip (6.5.0+), again the same issue.
The attached log is from journalctl --boot=-1, at timestamp 16:55:12 I have switched off the monitor.
