intelfb_create blocked for more than 120 seconds
We have an endurance test booting a Debian 10 system with a soft-reboot every few minutes that checks for kernel errors. Once in a while we get:

The PC is powered by an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1505L v5 @ 2.00GHz (/proc/cpuinfo) The kernel was built from https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cip/linux-cip.git/log/?h=linux-4.19.y-cip-rt
4 tasks are blocked (full logs below):
kworker/u16:3:222 intelfb_create() waiting on struct_mutex
kworker/2:0:34 intel_fbdev_sync() waiting on ifbdev->cookie + 1
systemd-logind:945 i915_gem_context_open() waiting on struct_mutex
task systemd-udevd:170 do_init_module() waiting on async_synchronize_full()
The latter got us to look at https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cip/linux-cip.git/tree/kernel/module.c?h=linux-4.19.y-cip-rt#n3503 and the following comment:
/*
* We need to finish all async code before the module init sequence
* is done. This has potential to deadlock. For example, a newly
* detected block device can trigger request_module() of the
* default iosched from async probing task. Once userland helper
* reaches here, async_synchronize_full() will wait on the async
* task waiting on request_module() and deadlock.
*
* This deadlock is avoided by perfomring async_synchronize_full()
* iff module init queued any async jobs. This isn't a full
* solution as it will deadlock the same if module loading from
* async jobs nests more than once; however, due to the various
* constraints, this hack seems to be the best option for now.
* Please refer to the following thread for details.

Interestingly, i915 appears to be the only drm driver making use of asyncs. Is this the cause of our problem?
As we found ourselves blocked on struct_mutex
, we wanted to find out who owns the mutex we are blocked on. We have built the kernel with CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING=y
and were able to reproduce the issue. lockdep reported the following:

It is a bit unclear why lockdep claims that struct_mutex
(9d351f9a) is locked by multiple tasks. It is supposedly held by i915_gem_idle_work_handler
but nothing in the code we looked at suggests that we may leave this function with the lock held.
This leaves us kinda puzzled
