full system freeze
Brief summary of the problem:
My system randomly freezes. The monitor output is frozen. I cannot switch TTYs (ctrl+alt+f1). I cannot ssh into the system anymore. There is nothing in journalctl.
I strongly suspect amdgpu being at fault here because this only happens when I am interacting with the GPU. For example, it happens more often when playing back video with hardware accelerated decoding. It never happens when the machine is idle. I have observed it freezing at the exact moment I open a video or run wlsunset.
I dual boot Windows on this machine. The issue never happens under Windows.
I vaguely remember the timeline of this issue. I am sure it has not happened more than 2 year ago and it has been happening for at least 2 months.
The issue happens to me on average every 16 hours of active use. Sometimes the time between is longer and sometimes shorter.
Looking around at other issues I noticed many similarities to #3460 (closed) . Unfortunately the reproducer from that issue does not work for me. I am going to try to disable Freesync to see if that helps.
Edit: Since I have disabled Freesycn, I've had no freezes. I would like to use Freesync though, so this is not a great longterm workaround.
