GSync Ultimate is unstable with AMD on Wayland
Brief summary of the problem:
AW3821DW
is a GSYNC Ultimate monitor which reports as Freesync compatible with a range of 1 - 144 Hz in Adrenalin (under Windows).
AMD recently released a long awaited driver fix for Windows which resolved driver hanging with certain adaptive sync monitors in 23.7.2 which seems to have alleviate issues with this monitor.
However, this isn't the case under Linux with Wayland. Freesync doesn't seem to work as intended with wlroots based compositors like Hyprland, RiverWM (with Way-Displays), Sway and Gamescope:
- Screen flickers: Only happens on desktop with VRR enabled but not while playing games. This occurs very frequently.

Driver crashes:
Mostly when the computer is idling or while playing games but it can also happen in desktop while using Chrome. The screen essentially freezes in-place while rest of the system continues to function normally. I can't switch TTY and restarting the GPU drvier (via SSH from another computer) doesn't help (

). This happens occasionally (2-3 times/week) -
Choppy gameplay with VRR:
Seems like vblank range range isn't working properly with only exception being Sway when launched with
-Dnoscanout
option
For reference, I switched from NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti (which was problem-free in Windows and X11) to AMD RX 6800 XT with Wayland and the system isn't as stable as it should be.
While researching this topic I noticed that this isn't the only monitor which suffers from these issues under Wayland, other examples are: AW2721D
and AW3423DW
My main concern here is choppy VRR and screen flickering as I suspect the driver hangs can be caused by a different issue?
