[Display] Asus Zephyrus G14 Display timing issue? Ghosting/Fading
I'm not entirely sure how to properly report a bug like this, but it is repeatable and definitely something within Linux that is causing it. I figured the best place to start would be with the drm > amd section.
There is a lot to cover here and it's pretty hard to wrap your head around, but bear with me.
Using Windows 11 the laptop is fine, no ghosting, no discoloration, or fading whatsoever and when using any Linux distro starting with the 6.1 kernel (I think?) after a few hours of the screen being on the image starts to degrade. It will eventually start to ghost (slow pixel response times) and the contrast lowers.
The fix is to install Windows 11 and after a while the screen corrects itself and it remains gone indefinitely until I try to use Linux again.
If you have ever done any screen overclocking or adding custom resolutions without proper timings you've likely seen the sort of issues I'm seeing here.
This is an AMD advantage laptop with the 680M integrated graphics and the 6700HS dedicated GPU. Enabling/disabling the dGPU doesn't make a difference and hooking up an external display is fine. Only the internal screen looks like it's being damaged when trying to use Linux. I fear that long term exposure to this will lead to permanent damage.
Originally I was thinking the laptop itself was defective and was prepared to RMA it, but since it works just fine on Windows I don't think it's the hardware itself.
Edit: It's worth noting that I used this laptop for months with the 5.19/6.0 kernel without any issues. It was around the 6.1 release when these problems popped up. Using these older kernels has other issues so it's not really usable, including overheating because the fan would fail to turn on and the trackpad had issues. 6.1 solved these issues and I fear it introduced a new one.
