7900 XTX Consuming 92 Watts During Idle with Multi-Monitor
Brief summary of the problem:
Whenever I have two monitors actively connected to my 7900 XTX, it's consuming ~92 Watts according to the output of Sensors. This power consumption looks very realistic giving the high idle temperature of the GPU and powerdraw of the entire PC through a power meter. Disabling the second monitor brings it down to a more reasonable 20 Watt power draw, but even that is a bit on the high side I believe.
Hardware description:
- CPU: AMD 5900X
- GPU: Reference 7900 XTX bought directly from AMD
- System Memory: 2x16B + 2x8GB 3200Mhz memory, for a total of 48 GB
- Display(s): LG UltraGear 27GP850-B 165Hz + LG UltraGear 27GN850-B 144Hz
- Type of Display Connection: Both connected via Displayport
System information:
- Distro name and Version: Archlinux
- Kernel version: 6.1.1
- AMD official driver version: mesa-git 23.0.0_devel.164371.f135309e736.5269a95f00c4d6964d487d9dbd94f62b-1
How to reproduce the issue:
- Boot into Gnome desktop with both monitor active.
- Monitor the GPU powerconsumption via lm-sensor command "sensors". Alternatively, verify the measurements via total system powerdraw and/or GPU temperatures to verify this value is accurate.
Expected outcome:
- Reasonable powerdraw of the GPU in idle
Actual outcome:
- Insanely high powerdraw of close to 100 Watts just sitting at the desktop doing nothing
Workaround:
- Disable the second monitor and it drops down to a more reasonable 20 Watts.
