Highest mode found by xrandr, and supported by the gfxchip, is not applied
verbatim copy & paste from January's: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109343 [paste] Initial Summary: bad display response when LCD preferred mode exceeds apparent gfxchip capability
To reproduce: 1-discard or recycle failed older LCD (WUXGA or less) 2-acquire recent widescreen LCD with resolution more than 1920 wide and/or 1200 high (above WUXGA) 3-connect old PC to "new" LCD using HDMI or Dual Link DVI cable 4-start an Xorg session
Various/alternative results observed with various combinations of LCD, OS and cable 1-1152x864@75MHz (though 60MHz 1920x1080, 1680x1050, 1280x800, etc. are supported) 2-1400x1050@75MHz (though 60MHz 1920x1200, 1920x1080 and/or 1680x1050 are supported) 3-display put to sleep 4-display reports unsupported input 5-Ctrl-Alt-Fn fails to switch out of X session 6-Ctrl-BS fails to abort X session 7-Ctrl-Alt-Del fails to restart PC
Expected result: 1-Xorg automagically starts in highest mode reported by xrandr: e.g. 1920x1080 on a 2560x1440 LCD 2-keyboard and mouse work normally 3-WM works normally 4-Interventional X configuration not required to achieve maximum supported mode

IIRC, in all tests, none of xf86-video-*, regardless of their distro aliases, were installed. IOW, failure seems to point to modesetting DDX.
