I have this problem only after an upgrade to version 1.18.4: I am running Unity DE on display :0 and xfce4 on :1. Almost every time I switch between them, the xserver exits.
Here's a video that demonstrates the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-UyUQ4A2w4 (The problem begins when I start the 2nd window manager)
and a related bug report in Canonical's LP that contains more details about my system: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1640146
