xrandr does not properly handle disconnected monitors

I forgot to disable my external monitor before disconnecting my laptop from its docking station. Two issues came up:
- Xorg continued to behave as if there was a monitor connected.
- When I issued the following command to have a single-headed display, my remaining display was powered off and I had to kill X:
xrandr --output TMDS-1 --same-as LVDS
If there is a better way to switch to single-headed, I can use that, but the problem should still be fixed.
