missing --auto with multiple outputs and rearranging doesn't work

Description
I recently upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 karmic to 10.04 lucid. Before the upgrade, this xrandr command worked and spread out my desktop across my two screens: xrandr --output DVI-0 --auto --left-of VGA-0 When I do this now, both screens turn black. However, doing it in two steps still works: xrandr --output DVI-0 --auto && xrandr --output DVI-0 --left-of VGA-0 The current x.org version is 7.5, not sure which it was before the upgrade.
No idea if it's related, but I thought I'd mention it: After every restart of the X server (manually or by rebooting) it is set to "clone" again (same picture on both screens), even though KRandRTray is running. Before the upgrade it would forget the setting occassionally, but not every time.
I am using the ati radeon driver. The video card is ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AP [Radeon 9600].
In case the screens matter: DVI-0 on the left is a LCD display with an auto resolution of 1440x900, VGA-0 on the right is a CRT screen and set to 1024x768.
Version: 7.5 (2009.10)
