the alts_toggle for switching between layouts does not work
According to issue #43 (closed), the grp:alts_toggle
option hasn't been working since 2008. But it is strange that this non-working option continues being listed. :| It is also strange that for any country in $threelevellayouts
the secondary option level3(ralt_switch_for_alts_toggle)
was forced upon the user even when they chose some plain, two-level layouts, as in setxkbmap us,uz -option grp:alts_toggle
. I think this is wrong.
So... I propose, in a first step, to restore the alts_toggle
as it was more than fourteen years ago, and replace the $threelevellayouts rules with plain * grp:alts_toggle = +group(alts_toggle)
rules, so that the right Alt key can continue to work as Alt_R
for people that want this. And then, in a second step, to add an alt_altgr_toggle
option, to have an Alts-toggle for people that want the right Alt key to be a third-level chooser, and for those who have a program that cannot cope with an Alt key producing a different symbol upon keypress and keyrelease. And in a third step, to clean up the parts that are no longer needed ($threelevellayouts
(that are incomplete anyway and hard to maintain), PC_LALT_LEVEL2
, PC_RALT_LEVEL2
, and the ralt_switch_for_alts_toggle
option). Does that sound like an acceptable plan, @svu, @whot?
(For the first step, see this patch.)
