## how to reproduce
* Create a rust project: `mkdir myrustproj && cd myrustproj && cargo new myrustproj`
* Generate the docs: `cargo doc`
* Check the filetype detected by xdg-mime with: `./target/doc/myrustproj/index.html`
It will return `text/csv`.

While in an ideal world gnome should write its file handlers to the standardized `mimeapps.list` files, the xdg-utils could use gio for querying this information from gnome like it already does with kde and lxqt.

One case of this is currently handled for Flatpak, but others are not. To give users an easy workaround when using portals is desirable, it would be useful to allow overriding the open method choice via an environment variable.
Currently, this could only be done by creating a file, $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/flatpak-info. An env var such as XDG_OVERRIDE_DE (for all utils) or XDG_OPEN_OVERRIDE_DE would make this simpler. I propose solving it this way rather than just adding an override to force using the portal because it would also cover other cases where a user wants different behavior.
An example of this being done by a packager via a patch adding an env var can be seen in https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/197118https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/xdg-utils/-/issues/236xdg-open [ EOF while looking for matching `"' ]2023-12-18T11:03:59ZMartin Valbaxdg-open [ EOF while looking for matching `"' ]### Info

Specifically line 1247 has "==" operator. When the script is executed with `dash` it produces an error "`/usr/bin/xdg-mime: 1247: [: xfce: unexpected operator`".
P.S. A relevant suggestion. If project test cases are using `bash`, then they should also have `--posix` option passed to the shell to ensure compliance.https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/xdg-utils/-/issues/233xdg-open opens mistyped files as URLs2023-10-29T04:45:16ZArmando Sanoxdg-open opens mistyped files as URLsIt seems this is feature but in my opinion should not be:

When I call
```
xdg-open some-mistyped-filename
```
it attempts to open this as an URL `http://some-mistyped-filename` in my default web browser, which is a nuisance since usually the name of the file is simply incomplete (comes from auto-completion where there are multiple files with the same base name but different extensions).
I'd rather `xdg-open` write an error and stay in terminal so I can seamlessly complete the filename.
Are there settings preventing xdg-open to open unknown arguments as URLs, if they don't contain "http://" or "https://"?
I also asked this question on [StackExchange / Ask Ubuntu](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1490165/prevent-xdg-open-to-open-mistyped-files-as-urls), where it was suggested this might be a bug.

`xdg-email --attach` is useful. period. but …
… the underlying implementation is Thunderbird specific (and broken) and supporting other clients would add a lot of complexity as there is no standard, de-facto standard or even semi-standard way of calling a mail-client in a way that attaches a file.
The current implementation has the following problems:
* The way the filepath is passed is an exploitable footgun.
* `'`, `,` and probably some other characters are not usable as filenames, solvable by switching to `file:` URIs.
* Thunderbird and Icedove have well-known desktop-file names, other mail-clients aren't that lucky,detecting them will probably turn into a mess
* How do I know that the configured mail-client supports the `--attach` option (if the answer is testing if its TB or ID then why use `xdg-email` at all)
* `xdg-email` is a very bad `xdg-open` remake without a lot of the improvements that went into `xdg-open`
* …
## Throwing away
Throwing this option away will definitly break some workflows. xdg-email would turn into something that assembles a `mailto:` address that gets handed over to xdg-open and done.
## Keeping it
Keeping it would mean someone has to fix …
* the issues directly related to the `run_thunderbird` function.
* communicating if --attach is possible (i.e. with a `--can-attach` option)
* the issue on how to deal with other mail-clients
* let xdg-open and xdg-mime do their job in order to reduce the complexity in xdg-email
Problem here is that someone has to do that and I know that I won't have enough time for this in the near future.
## In any way
* document the intended use of xdg-email
* move the interpretation of the `MAILER` Variable to xdg-open, it is the script that handles mail URIs from all over.
## What to do?
To be honest: I really don't know … both sides have pros and cons I'm levng this here for discussion.https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/xdg-utils/-/issues/229xdg-open: file: URIs getting handled in unexpected ways2023-10-07T17:30:06ZSlatianxdg-open: file: URIs getting handled in unexpected waysWhen opening a file:// with the hostname being either empty, `localhost` or the actual hostname of the machine get treated as expected.

```plaint...When opening a file:// with the hostname being either empty, `localhost` or the actual hostname of the machine get treated as expected.
However when called with any other hostname, the filepath turns into a relative filepath:
```plaintext
scripts/xdg-open "file://not-my-hostname/home/"
xdg-open: file 'not-my-hostname/usr/bin/xdg-open' does not exist
```
Expected behaviour would be that `xdg-open` hand over to a `x-scheme-handler/file`.
When the `file:` is not followed by a `//` exactly that happens as the usual URI handling kicks in there, but in such a case the hostname is missing and the path starts immediately after the colon.
## Relevant specifications
[The freedesktop specification](https://edeproject.org/spec/file-uri-spec.txt) has the following to say:
> File URIs are of the form "file:///", where hostname can be empty, with all non-allowed bytes escaped, containing no escaped '/' or zero bytes.
Which handles the most common cases and is mostly implemented correctly except for the "not my hostname" part.
> Some current apps generate URIs of the form "file:/". These are not correct according to RFC1738, so they should not be generated. However for backwards compatibility, it is recommended that such URIs are interpreted as file URIs with an empty hostname.
According to [RFC 8089 "file" Scheme](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc8089#section-2) both notations are valid.
Such that:
| URI | Host | Path | Handled correctly in xdg-open ? |
|-----|------|------|---------------------------------|
| [file:///foo/bar](file:///foo/bar) | | /foo/bar | yes |
| [file://foo/bar](file://foo/bar) | foo | /bar | when hostname matches local machine¹ |
| file:/foo/bar | | /foo/bar | no² |
| file:foo/bar | | foo/bar | no² |
¹ when not it gets incorrectly treated as if the path was `foo/bar`
² passed directly to scheme handler or `BROWSER` instead of extracting the filepath and opening
Relevant quote from [RFC 3986 section 3.2. Authority](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc3986#section-3.2):
> The authority component is preceded by a double slash ("//") and is terminated by the next slash ("/"), question mark ("?"), or number sign ("#") character, or by the end of the URI.https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/xdg-utils/-/issues/226Future Feature Idea: Make the xdg-utils explain what they are doing2023-10-01T12:34:46ZSlatianFuture Feature Idea: Make the xdg-utils explain what they are doingThis one is inspired by [Debian bug #771941](https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=771941).
When implemented it would make the `xdg-utils` explain what they are doing/would do (the debug statements already kind of do this) in addition of an option that will make operations with side effects (modifying files, running commands from desktop files) dry run (writing out in plain English what it would do instead of running the given command).
My idea would result in two additional command line flags: `--verbose` and `--dry-run` (maybe an `--explain` as an alias for both) where `--verbose` would turn on the debug output like setting the `XDG_UTILS_DEBUG_LEVEL` environment variable would.
Maybe this feature could be used as part of the testing suite?
As there are currently higher priority issues this is just written down to not forget the idea, also there is probably some discussion needed on how some of the details would translate to the existing code and which commands should support such a feature.https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/xdg-utils/-/issues/222xdg-settings and xdg-mime do not recognize single MimeType value with no trai...2023-07-12T06:28:42Zmaxnikulinxdg-settings and xdg-mime do not recognize single MimeType value with no trailing semicolonTry
where `tst-protocol.desktop` has a single `MimeType` option **without** the trailing semicolon.
```
MimeType=x-scheme-handler/tst-protocol
```
It is allowed accordingly to [Desktop Entry Specification](https://specifications.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/desktop-entry-spec-latest.html#value-types). The tool unexpectedly modifies the desktop file to
```
MimeType=x-scheme-handler/tst-protocol;x-scheme-handler/tst-protocol
```
The cause is incorrect list of patterns in [scripts/xdg-settings.in#L67](scripts/xdg-settings.in#L67)
```sh
case "$MIMETYPES" in
$MIME\;*|*\;$MIME\;*|*\;$MIME\;|*\;$MIME)
```
Certainly the `$MIME` option is missed while I am unsure concerning necessity of `*\;$MIME\;` that should be handled by `*\;$MIME\;*`. Blame has not shed some light on such duplication. It might be a workaround for some shell bug, but accordingly to shellcheck reports #221 the script does not look like highly portable. Notice that a trailing semicolon is not necessary when the application can handle multiple MIME types.
I expect the following:
```sh
$MIME\;*|*\;$MIME\;*|*\;$MIME|$MIME)
```
`xdg-mime` is affected as well, see [`search_desktop_file`](scripts/xdg-mime.in#L308)
```sh
grep -l "$MIME;" "$dir/"*.desktop 2>/dev/null
```
I am unsure concerning portable regexp for grep, but generally I expect
```sh
grep -l "[=;]$MIME\(;\|$\)" "$dir/"*.desktop 2>/dev/null
```
I am quite puzzled by [`set_browser_mime`](scripts/xdg-settings.in#L135) in `xdg-settings` restoring to `orig`, but the value may be empty. In my cases it happened due to bugs described above. The result is the following error message:
Command from `sh -x`, notice the empty argument:
```
+ xdg-mime default x-scheme-handler/tst-protocol
```
```
xdg-mime: application argument missing
Try 'xdg-mime --help' for more information.
```
Actually modification of desktop files by `xdg-settings` is a surprise for me. It is not documented and I would expect setting `[Added Associations]` in `mimeapps.list` appropriately instead. Another surprise is silence in the case of failures. Background:
In using `xdg-desktop-menu` I discovered that it does not handle directory names with a space in it. This lead me to Issue #117 where this behaviour has been documented. I added to that report by using `shellcheck` to discover what kinds of fixes were required to fix this issue. This unearthed a large number of problems which I added to that issue.
I then used `shellcheck` to run the same tests across the `xdg-utils` POSIX scripts installed in /usr/bin:
- xdg-desktop-icon
- xdg-desktop-menu
- xdg-email
- xdg-icon-resource
- xdg-mime
- xdg-open
- xdg-screensaver
- xdg-settings
- xdg-user-dir
`shellcheck` has the ability to export a diff, which I've attached here for each of those scripts:
Fixing this is unlikely to be as simple as using `patch` and given the scope of change, I'm uncomfortable starting the work to "fix" these scripts without maintainer input.
Note that I created these diffs using the following information:
- Shellcheck version: 0.7.1
- xdg-utils version: 1.1.3-4.1
- Debian 11.7
I used the following command:
Here follows a bug report about a strange behavior in opening Office documents in Linux under Microsoft Office 2010 and Wine.
When a Word, Excel, or whatever Office file (even OpenDocument) is opened via a doubleclick, a blank document is shown.
Interestingly this does not occur when the corresponding file is opened via a right click and "Open With". In that case, the file is displayed correctly.
I have observed that behavior for a long time with MS Office 2010 (and Wine) but until now it was unclear where the problem comes from. After reading the following Linux question on reddit, [docx Files leads to a blank Document in Microsoft Office (Wine)](https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/qyxkpf/docx_files_leads_to_a_blank_document_in_microsoft/) there exist a high chance that the problem is located in `xdg-open` which is part of `xdg-utils`.
More information can be found also at Wine bug report 54628, [Opening files in Microsoft Word/Excel/Office 2010 results in opening an empty document](https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54628).
Trying `xdg-open shortcut.desktop` results in opening it in default text editor.
Also there isn't any support for type 'Link':
> . . . The website said discussions about XDG should take place on this mailing list. I hope this is the best place for the technical issue below, since the issue involves the standard itself rather than the software, which seems to implement the standard as the standard stands, from my tests regarding this issue (using desktop-file-validate).
>
> The standard itself is missing a definition of what key is appropriate for the path where the Type is Directory. In fact, there doesn't seem to be any specification of the Directory type in the XDG standard other than that the extension should be ".directory". In fact, there seems to be no way to construct such a file in a way that desktop-file-validate doesn't show an error.
>
> May I propose "Path" could be the key in this case? It seems intuitive.
This may be helpful since existing software expects "Exec" to be an executable command. However, Type=Directory (or Type=File) might be enough to make Exec's meaning clear if it is not a command.
>
> It may also pave the way for a "File" Type implemented similarly. I suggest adding that.
> I have had several uses for such a feature so I implemented these features in an alternative standard called blnk. If XDG implements the features, I would change my program to match the standard. The use cases are as follows:
> - I (and various tech channels on YouTube) often install GNU/Linux systems on old/new computers for relatives to avoid various Windows issues. Such users don't understand symlinks. Even Mac users don't usually understand aliases (which they are called there and made easy to create like on Ubuntu) from what I've seen. They sometimes delete all of the files from one symlinked directory since they think there are two copies of everything. Having a shortcut that goes to the "real" directory is preferable and safer in this case.
> - In another case, the directory shortcut can point to a location that may not always exist. Even some favorite bars or programs simply "forget" (or hide) a subdirectory of an unmounted drive or remote host upon loading. This is not clear to the user what is going on. They may wonder where the shortcut went or what is happening. If there was a complete .directory file standard, then DEs (maybe via xdg-launch or some new xdg command that doesn't depend on mimetype) could launch the file and stderr could say that the Directory is missing or not accessible. The current workaround is to make an Application shortcut to a directory, but this is not always advisable. I've heard recommendations online saying to launch some particular file browser, whereas xdg-launch would be better. If the .directory spec were completed then implemented be DEs, there would be a clear answer to the question and there wouldn't have to be workarounds or handwritten .desktop files.
> - Perhaps DEs could implement following .desktop files in a similar way to symlinks: to traverse folders while inside of a file/directory chooser dialog box even. That feature is implemented on Windows, for example. That would allow people to have shortcuts in an appropriate place instead of an ever-growing "Favorites" bar in their file manager. Also, the favorites bar gets reset to nothing upon changing to a different DE or upon running a different flatpak.
(In other words: Even if both flatpaks use ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks, the sandboxing makes every program start with its own blank list unless that is worked around by adding that as accessible to the flatpak such as using Flatseal)
> I understand these issues are not the realm of XDG to implement, but having some sort of complete specification for Type=Directory
(and for Type=File as suggested maybe)
> would allow DEs to do whatever they want with it and have a clear way to remain compatible with other DEs in this regard, regardless of whether their implementation involves my wishlist.
