When running e.g.
$ desktop-file-install --dir=~/.local/share/applications Geany.desktop
in my home directory, a subdirectory named "~" is created. It would be nice if the "~" notation was supported by this command, i.e. ~ being the same as $HOME. Otherwise it can make for quite some confusion when .desktop files are silently placed in $HOME/~/.local/share/applications. It took me a while before I understood why my new .desktop files did not change the Gnome menu...
