A plea from a compulsive middle-clicker and text-highlighter about copy+paste implementation
Hello all, I've tried to reach out through the IRC channel but for whatever reason it isn't working so I'll make my plea here.
I have been using computers for over 20 years and throughout that time have developed a habit of highlighting text on the page at random, as well as clicking the middle button on the mouse. On Windows and Mac, this presents no problem. However, on Linux distributions which utilise Xorg it is extremely off-putting to be copying and pasting text through the mouse, without even realising it most of the time. It impacts my work when I write code and paste something random into the file accidentally.
I understand this has been a feature of the X Window System since the 1970s or so, but I would like to make a plea to you guys who are developing Wayland to please implement some way to turn middle-click-to-paste and highlight-to-copy OFF. It counter-acts how many people use their Windows and Mac machines and if we are trying to make Linux more accepted in the consumer space then we will need to present an option to enable / disable this feature so that people do not constantly copy and paste text by mistake.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing your responses.
