Resolution change for full screen applications

Disclaimer: I know this probably going to be unpopular, please feel free to close this if it is unwelcome.

This was inspired by this mastadon thread https://fosstodon.org/@rijnhard/110356419091291716

The request is simple, to allow full screen applications to switch screen resolution.

The use cases:

  • games
  • home theatre pc's
  • projectors
  • tv's
  • video playback

All of which (for ux reasons) would make sense for the desktop/primary resolution to differ from the resolution the full screen app will want to use.

This could be either:

  • primary > app
  • primary < app

I have been warned this is a glitch fest that tramples on the "every frame is perfect" philosophy, but (without diminishing that) it doesn't mean that these use cases aren't valid and that they should keep getting ignored.

Side note: thank you for all the never ending hard work that goes into the Wayland protocol.
