Guidance for designing new protocols

I've noticed that in the process of working on !187 (merged) and some of my own private protocols, there is no real reference for things to avoid and common patterns used in protocols. It would be nice if there were a document (here or in the proper Wayland repo) to provide some guidelines for designing new protocols.

Ideally the guidelines would give some idea to anyone designing a new protocol where to start.
