Plymouth never displays - unable to see password entry screen

The system boots with the screen lit and I can see early kernel messages logged. Around the time Plymouth starts however, the whole screen goes black. If I tap Esc twice then the screen lights up properly with the BGRT logo and decryption password prompt. Maybe related to #206.

Plymouth version: 22.02.122-3ubuntu2
Hardware: Lenovo X1 Carbon 10 (OLED if that matters) with i915 graphics. The problem doesn't seem to occur on other machines running the same release.
Debug log: plymouth-debug.log (claims DRM was rendering when nothing was visible)
