Stuttering on VMWare audio

I noticed there is a lot of stuttering during playback of sound on VMWare Workstation emulated audio device with sound.virtualdev="hdaudio" in the .vmx file. Using ALSA directly and Pulseaudio works fine. With Pipewire I need to use PIPEWIRE_LATENCY=200/1000 to fix this but that causes a lot of added latency which I don't get with pure ALSA or Pulseaudio.

Can we have some information about how pipewire is using ALSA differently?

Is this possibly related to !330 (comment 724213) ?
