Performance improvements, etc

Now that tomeu's code is merged, here's a set of patches (squishable) to significantly improve driver performance (in addition to fix various bugs discovered in the course of testing tomeu's code).

Also, comment out a really annoying line in the meson.build which caused builds to be atrociously slow. Just saying.
