Some more vbo cleanup and optimizations.

That should prepare a bit more ground for further optimizations in the vbo area. As well the change completes more optimizations that are currently easily possible.
Things that are now split out from some sketches lingering around for ages, rebased now on Mareks latest work. More to come ...
