Random corruption in KDE with Mesa 20.2 in VMware

  • OS: Fedora 33
  • GPU: VMware SVGA II
  • Kernel version: 5.8.13
  • Mesa version: 20.2
  • Xserver version (if applicable): 1.20.8
  • Desktop manager and compositor: KDE 5.19.5

Host is Windows 10 2004, VMware Player 16.

Random graphics corruption all over the KDE task bar and menus when running Mesa 20.2 on Fedora 33. I was also able to reproduce it by installing Mesa 20.2 from a third party PPA on top of Ubuntu 20.04. Issue was gone when I installed mesa 20.3 git from the Oibaf PPA on Ubuntu 20.10. Kernel version did not seem to matter.

All the test configurations I tried:

  • Fedora 32: kernel 5.8, mesa 20.1.8 - working
  • Ubuntu 20.10: kernel 5.8, mesa 20.1.8 - working
  • Ubuntu 20.10, kernel 5.8, mesa 20.3-git - working
  • Ubuntu 20.04, kernel 5.4, mesa 20.0.8 - working
  • Fedora 33: kernel 5.8, mesa 20.2 - not working
  • Fedora rawhide: kernel 5.9, mesa 20.2 - not working
  • Ubuntu 20.04, kernel 5.4, mesa 20.2 - not working
