lib32-mesa-git 20.2 causes Portal, HL2 and episodes to crash

Xserver version: X.Org X Server 1.20.8
Desktop manager and compositor: KDE Plasma 5.18.5, Kwin low-latency
Describe the issue
lib32-mesa-git causes Portal, HL2 and episodes as well as mods to crash.
anywhere from a few seconds after loading any level to few minutes after, the game crashes to desktop.
the main menu does not seem to crash.
I tried building 20.2 against llvm 10.0 and 11.0-git but it made no difference. all built via AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/lib32-mesa-git/
installing a pre-built 20.2-git package from chaotic-aur results in a crash a few seconds after map loads
running via steam-native, steam-runtime (beta and stable branches) and desktop icon all have the same result.
other Source engine games eg gmod, TF2 and Counter Strike: Source run fine on 20.2-git, as well as older games like Counter Strike 1.6 and HL1
this did not happen on the previous mesa-20.1-git build, only in the last week or so after moving to 20.2-git.
when running lib32-mesa 20.0.6 and also 20.1 everything appears to work fine.
