"Official" support for kernel module

This project requires kernel patches which severely hinders its deployment in settings where kernel patching is either unwanted or impossible. A loadable kernel module, however, is easy to include, for instance, as a selectable package with a distribution.

Are there any technical reasons for not turning this into a module? Would you support such a notion and maybe provide an 'official' repository to focus the work of all involved developers on one place?

EDIT: or is this supposed to be upstreamed?
