## Description

Dump of serial console during bootup... up to hang on shutdown.

Summary: I can start Xorg *once* just fine, also switch to/from text-consoles. But once this X-server ends, both monitors will turn black and go to powersave.

After this has happened, a new X-server will hang. Also a clean reboot is no longer possible, because also the shutdown-code running in the Kernel will hang with a similar stack trace.

This bug is reproducible 100%.

Hardware: NVIDIA Corporation G86 [Quadro NVS 290] (rev a1)
BOOT0 : 0x086f00a2
Chipset: G86 (NV86)
Family : NV50

Platform: amd64
Linux-Kernel: 3.18.0-rc1
Distribution: Arch-Linux

Xorg server: xorg-server 1.16.1-1 (from Archlinux repository)
Xorg driver: xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.11-2 (from Archlinux repository)

Everything looks pretty unremarkable while using the computer normally running X which is very stable, can run for days. Also terminating the X server looks uneventful.
X screen blanks after timeout, but backlight remains on forever. "xset dpms force off" has no effect. "vbetool dpms off" does turn off the backlight. Using nvidia proprietary driver, "xset dpms force off" turns off backlight but then has other issues ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-331/+bug/1268151 )

Curiously, and possibly related, "xset s activate" (via ssh and/or using sleep 1) has no effect. It does not blank the screen.
Possibly related, from Xorg.0.log:

Hello.

I am trying to use the nouveau driver in an Aspire 9420, which is shipped with a go7300 nvidia card. The lspci line is this:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)

I am using the following software:
* gentoo x86_64
* kernel 3.17.1 from kernel.org, no patches
* no fb driver enabled, other than what the nouveau drm stack enables automatically as deps
* no compositor, no xorg.conf
* libdrm, xf86-video-nouveau and mesa from git as of today (oct 25, 2014)
* xorg-server 1.16.1

When I boot my machine I can see the fb coming up, and the mode is set ok (with tiny characters and such). When startx takes into scene, then the screen becomes a pile of garbage. The laptop is not hard-frozen however. Most times, after like a minute or two I am taken back to the console (not always though). In any case, the computer is responsive. I can control+alt+del it even when the console remains garbled. Because of this, I was able to easily save the X log and the dmesg output, which I attach along with a photo of the corrupted screen.

I have tried rebuilding everything many times, in the hope that any ABI issues went away, but no change.
Kernel Log

This is the version of software that I am running:

extra/mesa-dri 10.3.1-1
extra/xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.11-2
core/linux 3.16.4-1
extra/libdrm 2.4.58-1

The system has an integrated ATI GPU onboard which is not used and a PCIe Geforce GT730 which is used in a dual head setup.

Occasionally, X will freeze during normal activity (no 3d, no video playback, just some terminals)

Sometimes the mouse cursor is still movable for a few seconds, afterwards, graphics is completely frozen up, the system is usually still pingable though.
## Description
Running kernel-3.17.0-301.fc21 on Fedora 21 (more or less 3.17.0 upstream I believe), my desktop (GNOME 3.14) froze while I was zooming in Google Maps in Firefox. I could ssh in and interact with the system normally and trigger a reboot, but X was stuck. Logs show a kernel WARNING: __list_del corruption , followed by a BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request. Pasting both traces in-line. The traces are separated from any other log messages by 3 minutes, so I don't think anything else is relevant.
Xorg log

Here you can see a video of it and also more important information is in the youtube description: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_c-26mB304

Like the text says, there seems to be some kind of 2D drawing action in Xorg that takes maybe a thousand times longer with nouveau than usual. But this drawing is rarely used, i.e. mostly only on window creation, so the delay doesn't get as apparent in most cases you run into (I suppose with my limited knowledge that this drawing actions are single Xlib graphic contexts like you can create with XCreateGC, created and rendered for the first time or changes in their palette or something).

So this makes applications open in a sluggish manner and with certain programs, like in the video example, it causes insane delays (like 10ms becomes 3 minutes) that extremely impair working properly with them.

I only really ran into this on my work PC, which has slower+older GT8400 cards, but at home once I tested it with GT430 also and I would rather say that the same sluggishnes was present, but maybe due to different causes?
Version information
Issue:
TV connected via HDMI reports "no signal" when system is booted. During boot the HDMI display output works fine, but when selecting the kernel to load in the bootloader the TV starts reporting "no signal". As the output is already lost before any X

What I tried so far:
- Booting with HDMI cable connected
- Booting with HDMI and VGA cable connected
- Booting with no cables connected, following hotplugging HDMI and VGA
None of above actions resulted in a fix or any other results with the display via the HDMI port, the display of the VGA port always is functional.

Other findings:
- The NVIDIA proprietary drivers HDMI display output works fine with the TV
- Graphics card is GeForce 9600 GS, according to the CodeNames this should be a NV96 (G96), though when quering the system it reports as G94. This seems to be conflicting. 05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GS] (rev a1)
- While having the HDMI and VGA connected, querying the status of all ports report that the HDMI and the VGA are connected::
## Description
Xorg version 1.14.4 with nouveau version 1.0.9

This has been happening for over a year with all versions of Xorf and nouveau that I've used. When the mouse cursor becomes a grabbing hand, the framebuffer box that is displayed around the hand is the wrong framebuffer. It displays the xscreensaver's framebuffer.

In case I am using incorrect terminology, assume this scenario:
1) My xscreensaver is set to show a picture of a cat hanging from a branch.
2) I logged in from the screensaver and I go to Google Maps.
3) I move my mouse over the map and the cursor changes from an arrow to a grabbing hand.

What I see is a box around the grabbing hand that shows the cat instead of the map. As I move the mouse around, the box moves with it (always around the cursor and always showing the picture of the cat).

This does not happen if I use the nvidia driver. This has been a bug in Fedora 17, 18, 19, and now 20 - indicating how many versions of Xorg and nouveau have had this problem.

Please let me know if this is a duplicate. I have searched for years, but I am certain that I simply cannot stumble upon the correct terminology required to find a mention of this bug.

Screen corruption

Boots and login fine, then as I open a terminal, there will be some screen corruption. As I open more windows (firefox) and loads pages the screen gets worse and worse up till X crashes (can still move the mouse).

I've built the newest linux kernel with the nouveau git (kernel 3.17 rc2+), also had the problem with stock ubuntu14.04 and with a 3.16 kernel.

The card is an Apple Nvidia Geforce 320M. It doesn't have dedicated memory, it uses 256MB from the system ram.

I include the logs, in the syslog, you will see many boots most of them in 3.16 but one in 3.17 at the end. Let me know if I can give you anymore info/logs/trace.

## Description
I’m getting frequent GPU lockups which always seem to occur when playing video (either via mpv or via flash-plugin). Not sure how to tell whether this affects the 2D driver or the mesa one. Please reassign as you see fit.

The bug manifests as one of the following:
1. X screen freezes, no response when switching VTs, only SysRq+REISUB works.
2. X screen freezes, VT switch works, system can be rebooted by userspace tools.

The common denominator in the reported errors seems to be: «nouveau E[ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0]» with either «write fault», «read fault», which is then followed by «PGRAPH engine fault».

I’ll follow-up with a few relevant log files.

My current setup runs on:
* Linux 3.16.2
* Xorg 1.16.0
Hello,

Here is the config :

cpu : AMD64
Video card : 7600GT (NV40 family)
kernel : 3.16.1
flashplugin : 11.2.202.400
gnome-shell : 3.12.2
firefox : 31.0

When I want to see the video at this link (nouvelle-twingo.renault.fr/), the screen freezes after the first part, when some controls appear on the screen (don't know if I'm clear...). I can still VT switch (slowly) and reboot.

Here is the complete dmesg. There are a lot of :
------ ISSUE DESCRIPTION ------

I ran this:

DRI_PRIME=1 glxspheres64

And I got a window which doesn’t refresh. This doesn’t occur in fullscreen mode. You can find a screenshot of the issue attached to the bug report.

At the first look, I’d say it’s an ACPI calls issue (see the kernel log just below).

When Linux resumes after suspension to RAM, I get no display until next
boot, but the backlight is on. I think this was true since I started
using this distro, but I rarely tried to use suspend.
This happens invariantly to Xorg.
Although my hardware is 64-bit, I use a 32-bit Linux.

Software versions:

* Linux 3.16.1

* libdrm 2.4.56

* mesa 10.2.6

* xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.10

nouveau reports errors like these to kernel log when the display should
turn back on:
## Description
In a system with dual GPU (Radeon HD 6550D [1002:9640] integrated in AMD APU + discrete GeForce 8600 GTS [10de:0400]) system boot fine and works as expected as long as no driver is attached to the Geforce.

Loading nvidia driver works mostly but suspend to RAM (S3) tends to fail.

Loading nouveau initialization is reported as successful but any attempt to use it ends in uninterruptible processed with nothing on screen.
## Description
Created attachment 104148
When the DP screen doesn't light up

Hey Ben,

Oddly-enough, my DP screen at work does not want to light up after a cold boot but works if I reboot right away.

As I told you before, this screen is weird when it comes to coming back from sleep mode.

The DVI screen lights up correctly but I doubt this issue is related to dual screen because I tried unplugging the DVI screen a while ago to investigate the resume issue and it didn't help.

I attached to the bug the kernel logs with nouveau.debug="PDISP=trace,I2C=trace,VBIOS=trace" for both the case when the screen doesn't light up and when it does.
## Description
When there is memory pressure GPU tends to hang.

This is probably related to system memory pressure (not vram) although I have no idea about vram utilisation.

Usually crash happens when I start an application that uses the GPU and the system starts to swap and/or OOM killer kills something and/or applications crash due to bad handling of OOM condition.
