## Brief summary of the problem:
After updating the kernel, under X11, the cursor is now noticeably affected by gamma ramps as applied by [redshift](https://github.com/jonls/redshift). This behaviour was introduced by [drm/amd/display: don't enable DRM CRTC degamma property for DCE (0e444a4de6b3)](https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=0e444a4de6b38c4593a07e4cfb5bf54c40cc79b6).
At first I thought this occurred because hardware cursors were no longer being used, but comparing drm_info with and without the commit reverted, assuming I'm understanding it correctly, it seems that they are now used with that commit.
It's really difficult to tell by looking at a screen if it was applied before, but maybe after this change, the gamma ramps are now somehow applied multiple times, intensifying the effect.
When the cursor is moved to the display attached to the card driven by nouveau, it always remains unaffected.

nls: add compose seq's for Cyrillic letters from KOI8-C into the main table
KOI8-C is a [pre-Unicode codepage](https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9A%D0%9E%D0%98-8#%D0%9A%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BA%D0%B0_KOI8-C_(%D0%A6%D0%B5%D0%BD%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D0%90%D0%B7%D0%B8%D1...
KOI8-C is a [pre-Unicode codepage](https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9A%D0%9E%D0%98-8#%D0%9A%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BA%D0%B0_KOI8-C_(%D0%A6%D0%B5%D0%BD%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D0%90%D0%B7%D0%B8%D1%8F)) for Caucasus and Central Asia Cyrillic-based alphabets (Tatar, Buryat, Kalmyk, etc.) It was rarely used even before Unicode. Yet, it has its own compose table for letters like Җ, Қ, Ү, that are outside of basic Russian alphabet (which was fitting, since it is challenge to find a physical keyboard engraved with them). The table sits in [`nls/koi8-c/Compose.pre`](https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libx11/-/blob/master/nls/koi8-c/Compose.pre).
Unfortunately, it was never converted and included into any of modern Unicode compose tables. As a result, to be able to type a few letters in Tatar, for example, the user has to install the whole input language into the system.
My proposal is to add those sequences either to en_us.UTF-8, or to the affected Cyrillic layouts - the latter option is justified by the fact that all proposed sequences are based on Cyrillic letters (those which are common across all Cyrillic layouts).
I have converted the sequences to Unicode, fixed and extended the table to match the scope of Latin and Greek tables. Current version: [dotXCompose4libX11](/uploads/f2ff22aec9b42c3c984d756ed1d69073/dotXCompose4libX11) - I'll keep updating it here, as well as [in the repo](https://github.com/roadkell/xcompose).
I was initially working on an exhaustive table for as many Cyrillic letters as possible to be typable from any Cyrillic layout, but to make it acceptable for merging I'm planning to consult with fellow linguists & translators and make an "essentials" table, that is concise enough for either en_US, or affected Cyrillic layouts. Meanwhile, I would like to discuss the patterns in use, the scope to aim for, and everything that is needed to be accounted for to make this table (or a part of it) acceptable for libX11. Thanks.

Here is an example trace:

```
Note that CompleteNotify with msc=10110327 was received twice. Curiously, the second one was arriving very late (230ms after the NotifyMsc request), the frame rate was 60fps.
This is not conformant w.r.t. the spec, which says
> If 'target-msc' is greater than the current msc for 'window', the event will be delivered at (or after) the 'target-msc' field.
```
: sim; pacman -Q libx11
libx11 1.8.2-2

```
In a nutshell, `XRebindKeysym` calls `LockDisplay`, does some work, and then calls `ComputeMaskFromKeytrans`. The subsequent callchain leading to deadlock is:
* `XkbKeysymToModifiers`, (when XKB is enabled)
* `_XkbUnavailable` (a macro)
* `_XkbLoadDpy`
* `XkbGetMap`
* `XkbGetUpdatedMap`
* `LockDisplay`
Which then blocks on an already-acquired mutex. A call stack from gdb is as follows:
[X11] [MODESETTING] [PERFORMANCE REGRESSION] Problems when using the Color Depth of "16" so that I can increase GPU performance with the Xorg Modesetting driver
### Conclusion:
Using the **Color Depth of "16"** can improve GPU performance compared to the default Xorg **Color Depth of "24"**
I have proof that using the **Color Depth of "16"** increases GPU performance, when a godot game was using the **Color Depth of "32"** when the Color Depth is was to "16" because of a problem with the **Crocus Mesa Gallium Driver**.
With the issue that was created at:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/7585
It shows that using the **Color Depth of "32"** can decrease FPS by around 37% compared to using the **Color Depth of "16"** on a godot game
I want this fixed because so that I can use the **Color Depth "16"** with the **Xorg modesetting driver** so that I can increase GPU performance by using the **Color Depth of "16"** when using the **Xorg modesetting driver** rather than the default **Color Depth of "24"**.
If COMPOSITE and ROOTLESS are both enabled in XQuartz, we can get a double free of a pixmap. The first free actually makes it available for scratch and the second frees it. Another allocation can come along in the future and get the deallocated scratch space and *boom*. Trivailly reproducable with ASAan enabled and using nedit. Just open a menu and then another menu.
Single guillemets are already used in many keyboard layouts and have existed in the Windows 1252 encoding for ISO-8859-1 compliant websites for seemingly as long as the other named quotation mark keysyms have. I find it somewhat baffling that most of the other essential quotation characters in the General Punctuation block of Unicode have named keysyms but not left/right single guillemets as logical extensions of the double ones found in Latin-1.<br>
I propose two possible macro names: `XK_singleguillemet{left|right}` or `XK_{left|right}anglequote`.
I've been having issues with X randomly crashing when resuming from suspend for about a year. Crashes are silent with default settings (no error message in journalctl or dmesg). This happens very randomly: I'd say once every 20 suspends. This can go fine for a month and then suddenly crash almost every day. I haven't identified a significant factor. I suspend with "systemctl suspend". I use nvidia kernel module, on Arch Linux.
When there is a crash, the screen remains black and USB devices are not usable (e.g. I cannot launch commands using the keyboard). The computer is still reachable via SSH, and I can kill my windows manager (i3) and start it again (although it seems there are more chances that X crashes again before a reboot).
I _think_ these crashes started when I started using a USB hub, although I'm really not sure about this (I can make more tests if necessary).
xrandr output after crash (via SSH):
```
$ DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output DP-3 --off

```
dmesg (with kernel options initcall_debug no_console_suspend ignore_loglevel)
I've been clueless regarding who to report this bug to, but as it seems pretty certain that this is related to X now, I hope it's the right place for this.
I tweaked a bit on X11 config and found out, that setting DRI to "2" instead of "3" shows the screen again.
So why do i get black screen with DRI "3"?
This only works with "older" intel driver. Tried the modesetting driver and it's the same black screen.
Thanks.
DDC code only allows 128 bytes for DDC data
[Originally diagnosed by Henry Zhao when working on Oracle Solaris Bug 16027951 - _Xorg GUI fails to start when installing solaris 11.1_]
In `src/ast_driver.c`, the `ASTProbeDDC()` and `ASTDoDDC()` functions declare a fixed size buffer:
```
unsigned char DDC_data[128];
```
which is filled in by `ASTGetVGAEDID()` or one of it's siblings and then passed to `xf86InterpretEDID()` in the Xorg server.
If the extension flag (the 126th byte) is non-zero, indicating extensions blocks to follow, the X server reads beyond the buffer
boundary resulting in a seg fault.
Increasing the static buffer size can avoid the seg fault, but doesn't make things work correctly, as all the EDID reading functions in `src/ast_vgatool.c` do not write more than 128 bytes to the DDC_data buffer, so would not provide valid extension block data for the server to parse.
In Solaris, we carry a workaround Henry wrote to stop the segfaults by always setting the extension flag to 0:
Switching to a Virtual Terminal "Freezes" Applications
Not sure if this is an issue with the xserver or amdgpu, or if it's an issue at all or by design, but since the "AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch\n" is in 'glx/glxdri2.c' that is included in xorg-server, I'll start here.
Not sure if this is an issue with the xserver or amdgpu, or if it's an issue at all or by design, but since the "AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch\n" is in 'glx/glxdri2.c' that is included in xorg-server, I'll start here.
Also not sure if AIGLX is even related in any way, but I am pretty sure I confirmed that I did not see it when using NVIDIA, and when I switched to AMD (xf86-video-amdgpu) is when I noticed that some applications stop doing their thing in the background when I switch to a virtual terminal, and there is this message which is currently my only lead.
On my Gentoo Linux installs I tend to make use of virtual terminals pretty often, and since I use no display managers and such, it's also the way to log in as another user to run their own X session. Likewise, there is no systemd, polkit, pam, and other such things that might commonly be found in many Linux systems nowadays.
Desktop is LXQt with KWin (sometimes LXQt and LXQt or Xfce on another user).
Some examples I've seen:
- Playing a video of a live stream (for example from twitch.tv) via mpv/streamlink; the video will go in the background for a time, but will eventually stop as if the network activity would stop.
- Online video games /may/ get disconnected (this /might/ not happen if the application is minimised before the VT switch (game running via Wine in this case)).
- The Gentoo Portage package manager gets stuck (I believe it was while fetching packages).
- When switching back to the desktop, instant messaging application qTox plays the notification sound for messages that came in during the VT switch (it does seem like the messages are actually delivered, however).
It somewhat seems like the applications actually hang, and as such, stop dealing with anything network-related and get disconnected, but some applications (like qTox, Irssi, Weechat) do stay connected. In the Gentoo Portage case, it's a CLI running in a terminal emulator (Konsole).
I may have seen this just by using 'ping' even, but testing it now, it does seem to keep going in the background.
I suppose it's more secure in that audio and such don't "bleed over" to the other user(s), but it certainly doesn't seem intentional that some things quite literally stop doing what they're supposed to be doing. : )
Thank you!
