The plasma login screen freezes on kernel 5.9.x and 5.10
General description of the error:
After installing kernel 5.9.x as part of the upgrade, the Plasma login screen freezes, but the computer does not crash. You can log into the virtual console and use the computer normally. After booting from 5.8.15-1 kernel everything works fine.
Steps for reproduction:
- Install OpenSuse Tumbleweed with kernel 5.9.x.
- Boot from this kernel.
- The plasma login screen will freeze.
What should be the correct reaction?
After booting on the new kernel, the login screen should work normally and you should be able to log into the system.
Additional information:
- Operating System: opensuse tumbleweed.
- Graphical environment: Plasma 5.20.3.
- Kernel: 5.9.x - not working // 5.8.15-1 working.
- I have an nvidia card and I use open source drivers.
Logs: systemd-journal-log.txt Xorg.0.log xorg-session.log
History:
The bug has already been reported to OpenSuse and Takashi Iwai referred me here. The full thread is available at this link. I will summarize that thread, but for details, please click on the link above.

The entire 5.9.x kernel is not working. Plasma freezes on login screen, but I can enter TTY (virtual console).
-
After installing 5.10 RC kernel, even Plasma login screen doesn't show and I can't enter TTY (virtual console). So it's worse than on line 5.9.x
-
I also tested the 5.9.x and 5.10 vanilia kernels, the problem is exactly the same.
-
If I start the system with the "nomodeset" option, the login screen does not freeze.
I keep installing updates from OpenSuse and the problem persists.
Update 2020-12-07
I work on an additional monitor and the problem with the freezing login screen occurs when a second monitor is connected. If I unpin it, the login screen works fine and you can log into the system and use it. I'm using a laptop.
