20.04 & 21.04: With Display Port & HDMI in use for dual monitors, both grub and Windows hang (stop) before login
Monitor 1: MSI Optix G241 Esports Gaming IPS Monitor
2x HDMI (1.4b) 1x Display Port (1.2a) This monitor is attached to the Display Port
Monitor 2: ASUS VS248HR
Signal Input : HDMI, D-Sub, DVI-D AV Audio Input : HDMI This monitor is attached to the HDMI port
-
If both monitors are connected, on booting using Monitor 1, grub hangs (stops) and never gets to the desktop.
-
If I try the same using Windows, it boots to the login screen on Monitor 1 but hangs (round and round icon) and is never usable.
-
If I just connect monitor 1, both grub and Windows boot normally to the login screen.
-
If monitor 2 is turned off with the HDMI cable still connected, grub still hangs (stops). I must not connect the HDMI cable to get grub to boot to the login screen.
-
If I plug in the HDMI cable AFTER booting grub on monitor 1, monitor 2 display mirrors monitor 1. The screens both show the screen position options.
I can select where monitor 2 is placed but then monitor 2 takes over and the desktop completely moves to monitor 2. Monitor 1 then is either to the right or left with an empty screen. Setting the Primary monitor in Display settings makes no difference.

I would like both monitors to be usable in the normal fashion, one primary, one secondary both controllable via the Display options in Ubuntu 21.04.
