Enabling AMDGPU by default for SI & CIK
Hi!
I'm opening this ticket to track here the enablement of the amdgpu driver for the Southern Island (SI - GCN1 - GFX6) and Sea Island (CIK - GCN2 - GFX7) by default. As today the support is behind an experimental flag.
On August 2020 there was a request by @bnieuwenhuizen to enable it by default on this THREAD on amd-gfx mailing list
On that thread @agd5f and @ckoenig said that the main showstoppers are:
- Lack of analogue connector support with DC on CIK and SI
- Lack of HDMI/DP audio support without DC on CIK and SI
DC support for SI was mainlined on Kernel 5.10, without the analogue connector support.
Maybe the DC team can help with a more complete answer about this task (tagging @hwentland @siqueira and @superm1 for visibility).
Also, while UVD for SI was mainlined on Kernel 5.9 there was a THREAD on amd-gfx about porting VCE1 (the encoding engine) from the radeon driver to amdgpu but seems stalled. Maybe the VAAPI/VDPAU team can help with this task (tagging @leoliu @thongthai and @rdong for visibility)?
Enabling it will help with a better out-of-the-box experience for many users on different distributions (enabling Vulkan and ACO support for example).
Many of these card are still very capable as today so having them enabled by default on amdgpu would be nice!
I hope this ticket doesn't sound too much as an hard request but only as a summary for the situation on SI and CIK as today
Thanks to all the AMD Open Source Linux Team!
