Boot with kernel 6.6.13+ hangs at uevents nomodeset helps, radeon and amdgpu
## Brief summary of the problem:
When booting self compiled kernels version 6.6.x the process gets stuck at hardware initialization through uevents. Using nomodeset makes boot complete but without graphics.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=292265 – with ADMGPU
https://bugs.gentoo.org/925861 – my personal one with radeon (TAHITI never worked with AMDGPU)
## Hardware description:
- CPU: AMD A8-4500M
- GPU: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Trinity [Radeon HD 7640G] [1002:9903]
- System Memory: ?
- Display(s): hannspree touch something/ internal TFT
- Type of Display Connection: HDMI
## System information:
- Distro name and Version: Gentoo Linux
- Kernel version: 6.6.13, 6.6.18, works on 6.1.67
- Custom kernel: compiled with radeon as module, no conflicting Radeon FB, .config see Gentoo bug ticket from above (make syncconfig from 6.1.67, one kernel with all default options, a second with all N, no difference)
- AMD official driver version: ?
- booting with initramfs and firmware, does not matter whether firmware is builtin/ no modules or with modules and late firmware loading
## How to reproduce the issue:
1. Compile
2. Boot
3. Hangs infinitely at uevents (no freeze, NUM key still working, seems to wait for some hardware, no sshd, no TTY)
I already searched through the existing issues, namely
- #3126 – mine does not boot at all, nomodeset blocks all GPU usage
- #3160 – no switching of UEFI framebuffer to graphics card (normally screen blanks at this stage, returns and proceeds)
- #3207 – will also try 6.5 but sounds identical, except the blank screen

Radeon X700 PRO [RV410] crashes at boot: "Failed to wait GUI idle while programming pipes. Bad things might happen." (kernel 6.6.13 + kernel 6.8-rc3)

At first I thought my Radeon X700 PRO got defective due its' age but then I got the same dmesg with another R400 card, a Radeon X800 GTO.
Also a X1050, a X1550 and a HD6570 work perfectly well on the same machine so I think this might be a specific problem only showing up on R400 cards.
When the radeon module gets loaded I get this `Failed to wait GUI idle while programming pipes. Bad things might happen.` and shortly afterwards `RIP: 0010:r100_irq_process+0x160/0x202 [radeon]`, see dmesg:

The computer boots without screen attached on that card (but on another card).
Once I plug a screen on the card I get those other errors including a GPU reset and the computer hangs.

I have reproduced it on two different motherboards and both Ubuntu 23.10 and 22.04 LTS.
I would like to know if that's a driver bug or if the card is faulty.
One thing is that the web has plenty of 10 years old threads about similar error logs and people saying to disable modesetting to workaround their issues, though modesetting is not really optional today.
_Edit:_ The amdgpu log lines are because there is another GPU (here, a Vega integrated with the CPU), this is what allows me to boot the system without plugging a screen on the HD 6870. I also tested on another computer where the screen was plugged on another TeraScale GPU. This way I know everything works unless I start to use the HD 6870.

## Brief summary of the problem:
Multiple devices with Trinity/Richmond graphics have this issue: audio played over DisplayPort is slow and low-pitched. When using a DP->HDMI converter cable the audio sounds fine, but with a DP cable the bug happens 100% of the time.
When playing videos the video stutters and plays slowly. After switching the audio from DP to built in speakers the video playback speed increases and catches up to where it should have been. One can reproduce this with any youtube video.
When playing a pure 440Hz sine wave over DisplayPort the output is muddled with large components at 328, 1637, and 2304Hz.
This is the same issue as #2012

## Brief summary of the problem:
Trying to play a video in Telegram everytime causes my system to crash: the screen first became black and then artefacts with different colors happens. Sometime I am able to switch to another VT, where I can see a lot of messages with errors, sometimes I am not. It happens with Linux version 4.19-6.5. Not able to check kernels lower then 4.19 because they are not booting on my system at all.

It occurs in several distributions like:
- Ubuntu 22.04.3 (GNOME 42.9 @ X11), kernel 6.2.0-32-generic (64-bit)
- Manjaro (KDE Plasma 5.27.7 @ X11), kernel 6.5.0-1-MANJARO (64-bit) and 6.1.49-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
- openSUSE Leap 15.5 (KDE Plasma 5.27.4 @ X11), kernel 5.14.21-150500-55.19-default (64-bit)
Easy to reproduce but not all resolutions cause this warning.
Kernel warning occurs one time (probably because WARN_ON_ONCE() function), so to repeat the problem machine must be rebooted.
It seems that changing resolution with `xrandr` (after reboot) does not cause this problem.

## Brief summary of the problem:
While trying to start Xfce I'm completely unable to enter graphic mode. At first look into /var/log/Xorg.0.log immediately found an information of driver's issue, that looks rather serious (see below). It happens everytime.
Tried it with current kernel 4.19.293 and with earlier 4.19.251 — it must be long-standing bug. On that earlier kernel the graphic system has been started, but as worst VGA one can imagine — 640x480 and no acceleration whatsoever. Hoping that it has been fixed meanwhile I've replaced the kernel with the newest one — just to notice the things got even worse.

## Brief summary of the problem:
Whenever I try to log out of KDE or just start Wayland, the screen becomes 2 or 3 stripes and changing ttys doesn't even work. This also happens when I click restart but it does restart regardless, leading me to believe the kernel hasn't crashed. If I install xf86-video-ati, the problem goes away, but obviously you can't use that with Wayland and trying to start it with that installed causes the screen to corrupt anyway. My expectation is I land at the login screen, but that doesn't happen. I can reproduce this every time without fail until I turn dpm off (which then breaks sleep).
## Hardware description:
- System: HP G7-2226NR
- CPU: AMD A4-4300M
- GPU: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Trinity 2 [Radeon HD 7420G] [1002:9992]
- System Memory: 8GB
- Display(s): Internal LVDS Display (this is a guess but it's likely LVDS)
- Type of Display Connection: LVDS
## System information:
- Distro name and Version: EndeavourOS Linux
- Kernel version (the latest I've tested that has this issue): ```Linux lynden-pavilion-g7 6.5.0-rc6-1-mainline #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue, 15 Aug 2023 10:49:44 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux```
- Custom kernel: 5.10.136 and 5.10.156 (built with the tkg script) I've tested so far to be unaffected (maybe when I click restart it's happening on a black screen but I'm not sure as shutdown and log out, as well as Wayland seem to work, but I randomly get the annoying flickering again after some restart tries with a black screen instead of corruption that I can't reliably reproduce). 5.10.191 (built myself), 6.5rc6, 5.15.94 and whatever the latest 6.4 release is straight from the Arch repos has the behavior described below.
- AMD official driver version: N/A
## How to reproduce the issue:
Log into KDE with DPM enabled by default and verify xf86-video-ati is uninstalled.
Try to log out and/or start Wayland
The screen will turn off (normal) and when it turns back on, become permanently corrupted until you reboot, and will have a temporary subtle flicker along the edges if you let it sit there for a while, even when you boot into Windows the flashing stays for a few minutes. This could potentially damage the display but I'm not sure (maybe not, since it might just be a side effect of the hard reboots that are needed).
Alternate path:
Just launch Wayland, it'll happen every time.

### Log files (for system lockups / game freezes / crashes)
Since I can't get a dmesg with no display output, I'll have to give a dmesg before the crash if it helps at all. I also checked journalctl -b-1, and radeon doesn't report anything going wrong? That's why I'm stumped and making this bug report, additionally, staying on a old kernel like this is not a good solution.

I can give a Xorg log for an affected boot, however

Sway/Wayland, Firefox (in Wayland mode) suddenly stuck, everything else
works fine.
Trying to kill any Firefox-related process, one eventually found stuck
in `D state`.
Then it occurred to me to check the logs/`dmesg` and from that point
started to suspect the kernel's report bellow is the root cause:

Note that process `3902` mentioned above was likewise associated with
running Firefox, however, I was apparently able to kill it just fine,
i.e., it was not stuck in D state -- that was the matter with sibling
`3901`:
```
$ head -n7 /proc/3901/status
Name: CanvasRenderer
Umask: 0022
State: D (disk sleep)
Tgid: 3768
Ngid: 0
Pid: 3901
PPid: 1
```
```
$ ls -anv /proc/3901/fd | grep /dev/dri/
lrwx------. 1 1000 1000 64 Aug 4 17:21 191 -> /dev/dri/renderD128
```
(
What baffles me here is that `Aug 4 17:21` > `Aug 04 16:58:11`.
So perhaps said hang of Firefox was observed some 20 minutes after
some discrepancy was observed in the kernel? Sadly, I first rush
to "unhang" Firefox, even if it meant killing whatever processes
behind, and just after apparently a remaining process stayed
unkillable, I set out to investigate, so clear timing of events
got lost.

## Brief summary of the problem:
Booting Mint Linux 23.2 or MX Linux 21.2 (Ubuntu/Debian based) and getting back screen partway through the boot sequence. Have to use nomodeset to disable the driver to get the disto Live USB to boot. It then starts in VESA mode (1024 x 768 resolution)

Not sure what is required, but since I am having to use nomodeset, the logs do not reflect the actual state of things.
After I installed the distro rathern than running from LiveUSB, I did notice this error at startup:
ERROR No UMS support in radeon module!"
To start with I would like to confirm that this GPU is actually supported.
Thanks.

imac12,2 (27” 2011) with Radeon HD 6770M can’t change backlight/brightness
I have a sibling of the iMac12 model described in issue #1838, which was closed (I think successfully) about a year ago.
The title was "imac12,1 (21.5” 2011) with Radeon HD 6750M can’t change backlight/brightness"

I have a sibling of the iMac12 model described in issue #1838, which was closed (I think successfully) about a year ago.
The title was "imac12,1 (21.5” 2011) with Radeon HD 6750M can’t change backlight/brightness"
What I have here is the iMac12,2 (27" 2011) model, which seems to have a Radeon HD 6770M. Same problem as in the older issue report, there should be a "radeon_bl0" folder in /sys/class/backlight, but when installing openSUSE Tumbleweed with kernel 6.4.6 there is only "acpi_video0", and manipulating the value in the "brightness" file in that folder has no effect on the backlight at all. Max value for that is 15 in the "max_brightness" file, other values cause an error. But no value from 0 to 15 makes any difference in brightness.
Booting from a Linux Mint 21.2 live ISO which is still using kernel 5.15, I see the "radeon_bl0" folder. Max value is 255, and manipulating the value in the "brightness" file with values between 0 and 255 will change the backlight brightness from completely off to full brightness.
Oddly, the brightness keys while booted into Linux Mint 21.2 show the OSD overlay changing, but apparently the backlight device being manipulated by the brightness keys is the "acpi_video0" device, since there is no change in brightness unless I manually change the value in the "radeon_bl0" folder.
Any chance a similar patch can be made to the one that fixed #1838? I barely know what I'm looking at but the patch diff seemed like it was only changing a few lines of something.
Edit: I didn't notice there was a way to link a new issue to an existing issue (from the vertical "..." menu). There doesn't seem to be a way to add this linking after the fact by just editing the issue.

Journalctl -b -1 -xe
show me a lot of occurrences of the following two lines..
kernel: radeon 0000:01:00.0: ring 0 stalled for more than 10444msec
kernel: radeon 0000:01:00.0: GPU lockup (current fence id 0x00000000032e5e8e last fence id 0x00000000032e5ec1 on ring 0)
Before the first occurrence of them in the journal, there is nothing special that indicate some problem.
After I turn off the system by the hardware button and I can see in the journal that the system shutting down, the same two lines keep on occurring.
In some places 2 times and in some other more like 10-50 times.
Until the system is all shutdown.
At the end of the shutdown process the screen(s) comes alive for a bit and I can see the shutdown sequence.
I am not sure how to reproduce the issue as it just happens.

The last bits in the xorg log, about mouse and keyboard, is me trying to see if they have come lose..
So in actuality it seam that there is nothing interesting in the log.
Is this some fault on the card or can it be the driver?
The card is not specially active at this times, no film or anything such.
IS there some software I can run to check or stress the card that also will dump any information when the card crash that would reveal if this is a hardware problem or a driver problem?
Thanks, J

...but it's just the screen! Running sshd on the machine I can login remotely and poke around. There's nothing the least bit suspicious in dmesg after resume, which is puzzling to me.
According to lspci the GPU is a RV730/M96-XT (Mobility Radeon HD 4670).
I have an updated Fedora 38 system, but have also installed and tested kernels: 6.3.11-200.fc38 and 6.4.0-59.fc39 with the same result.
Kernel parameters tested: "amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 pcie_aspm=off modprobe.blacklist=radeon rd.driver.blacklist=radeon" all together, same problem.
Also tried blacklisting amdgpu and running with just radeon, same problem.
Tried running Fedora in Xorg and poking around with xrandr remotely after resume but didn't seem to be anything wrong regarding connected displays.
Tried poking around with /sys/class/backlight and everything seems ok there as far as I can tell.
