And this is more like the truth.
It means memory is not allocated from userspace and therefore I not see the true culprit.
Since my typical behavior differs only by playing in game, I dare that the video driver is to blame.
My knowledge is not enough to display information about how much memory the drivers allocated to themselves.

- Occurs after logging into Gnome, but not at the login screen
- Sometimes the full display is constant solid white and sometimes it flickers solid white several times a second
- When solid white, cursor is still visible and moveable
- No sign of processes crashing or kernel backtrace in logs
- Occurs with both Wayland and X11 sessions
After going through the patchset in 6.1.4 and testing while reverting, I was able to locate the commit that introduced the issue: [drm/amdgpu: make display pinning more flexible (v2)](https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm/drm/commit/?id=81d0bcf9900932633d270d5bc4a54ff599c6ebdb) . Reverting the commit eliminates the issue all the way through to 6.1.6 .

On any kernel >5.16.9 the AMD Radeon 5500 XT (Navi 14) is unable to maintain 60fps on GNOME desktop (version 43.2) on 4k@60Hz. This can easily be seen by running `glxgears` with default vsync enabled, open a big browser window (e.g. Brave browser with tabs for me) and dragging it around. The desktop becomes very sluggish and unpleasant to work with.
On kernel 6.1.2 I got the results below.
Without doing anything the frame rate is stable around 55fps with just a Brave browser window open. When dragging the window around, the frame rate drops to around 35fps.
```
❯ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
270 frames in 5.0 seconds = 53.874 FPS
274 frames in 5.0 seconds = 54.769 FPS
266 frames in 5.0 seconds = 53.030 FPS
276 frames in 5.0 seconds = 55.047 FPS
268 frames in 5.0 seconds = 53.468 FPS
209 frames in 5.0 seconds = 41.611 FPS [Here I started dragging the Brave window around]
179 frames in 5.0 seconds = 35.797 FPS
181 frames in 5.0 seconds = 36.198 FPS
181 frames in 5.0 seconds = 36.081 FPS
201 frames in 5.0 seconds = 40.063 FPS
184 frames in 5.0 seconds = 36.676 FPS
```
On kernel 5.16.9 I took these measurements which look much more normal:
```
306 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.998 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.997 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.792 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.000 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.997 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.598 FPS
```
When disabling vsync via running `vblank_mode=0 glxgears`, there is still a performance drop from kernel 5.16.9 to kernel 6.1.2, I'd say around 15% less fps. However the performance is somewhat normal.
In addition to that the whole desktop becomes responsive again while running `vblank_mode=0 glxgears`.
kernel 6.1.2
```
vblank_mode=0 glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
114305 frames in 5.0 seconds = 22860.992 FPS
117167 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23433.328 FPS
119405 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23881.000 FPS
117103 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23420.596 FPS
113948 frames in 5.0 seconds = 22789.430 FPS
116132 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23226.387 FPS
```
kernel 5.16.9
```
135972 frames in 5.0 seconds = 27194.285 FPS
133782 frames in 5.0 seconds = 26756.283 FPS
135063 frames in 5.0 seconds = 27012.564 FPS
136156 frames in 5.0 seconds = 27231.156 FPS
135980 frames in 5.0 seconds = 27195.928 FPS
132121 frames in 5.0 seconds = 26424.115 FPS
135246 frames in 5.0 seconds = 27049.037 FPS
134876 frames in 5.0 seconds = 26975.057 FPS
```

## How to reproduce the issue:
* Compile any kernel >5.16.9 and run GNOME Wayland 43.2 in 4k@60Hz in combination with an AMD 5500 XT.
* While running GNOME, open a larger window (e.g Chromium with a bunch of tabs), run `glxgears` with default vsync and drag window around
* See how frames drop to 40-35 fps
* Then run `vblank_mode=0 glxgears` and see how the desktop becomes responsive again
* Retry with kernel 5.16.9 for comparison

Last I checked, VRAM buffers are not zeroed before being passed to userspace. This is an exploitable information leak in e.g. Flatpak and Snap unless they block GPU access, which for performance reasons is a non-starter. It also prevents virtgpu native contexts from being secure.
It is possible that this has been fixed already, in which case please close this ticket. I cannot check as I do not have the hardware.
## How to reproduce the issue:
Run any of the demo programs that dump stale GPU memory.https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2157Add a way to disable Display Core per card2023-05-25T03:37:08Zmars mellowAdd a way to disable Display Core per card## Describe the problem

We need to disable Display Core in order to get analog output support, and disabling Display Core makes HDMI output for audio unavailable.
## Describe the new feature behavior
If the user has more than one card, maybe it'd be possible to only disable Display Core to the GPU that's serving images to the monitors, leaving other AMD cards the option to do HDMI audio.
Currently, in order to disable Display Core we use the following kernel parameter `amdgpu.dc=0`, if there's a way to identify a card, perhaps something like `amdgpu.disable_dc=identifier` could be added.
While, ideally, Display Core would gain support for analog output, I don't think anyone is working on it, so this could serve as a workaround for people who have two AMD cards.https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2154Performance issues after suspend (DPM is becoming disabled on resume)2023-05-02T19:56:13ZAbrar AhmedPerformance issues after suspend (DPM is becoming disabled on resume)## Brief summary of the problem:

Suspending and resuming the system results in graphics performance that is almost 3x slower than what is seen after a clean boot.
The Witcher 3 went from around 48FPS down to 14FPS on my system.
I noticed that there is this message that only appears after resuming,
```Sep 08 21:33:43 abrar-laptop kernel: amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: amdgpu: dpm has been disabled```
This suggests that the gpu can not properly clock up during intensive workloads?
- AMD official driver version: N/A
## How to reproduce the issue:
1. Restart
2. Run a graphically intensive application
3. Note down the performance
4. Turn off all apps and suspend the system
5. Resume system
6. Run the same app and notice the drastically lower performance
Bisected to agd5f/linux@4c7631800e6bf0eced08dd7b4f793fcd972f597d.
I tried `amdgpu.async_gfx_ring=0` on the kernel command line as a workaround, but that resulted in the amdgpu driver failing to initialize successfully at all.
## Hardware description:
- GPU: AMD Navi 21 GL-XL [Radeon PRO W6800]
## System information:
- Kernel version: 5.19.0+
- Custom kernel: `drm-next-2022-08-03` tag merged on top of `linux-5.19.y` branch
- Mesa 22.2.0-rc1 or newer
## How to reproduce the issue:
1. Boot kernel which has the bisected commit
2. Log into GNOME Wayland session
3. Run Steam in Big Picture mode
The GFX hang occurs within a few seconds of the Steam Big Picture mode starting up.https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2112HDR Support2022-08-05T19:25:40ZDmitri SeletskiHDR SupportHello.
Please consider implementing HDR in AMDGPU driver. We know that AMD provided open source driver implements HDR functionality, so it is possible.
Its a technology that Linux sourly misses in Games, Videos, Photography content.
Youtube provides HDR videos for a while now.https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2107Enable SI/CIK in amdgpu by default/remove from radeon?2023-05-19T20:34:49ZLegacy DevicesEnable SI/CIK in amdgpu by default/remove from radeon?Vulkan performance and OpenGL performance using radv and amdgpu mesa drivers is great with SI and CIK cards when paired with amdgpu rather than radeon.
There is no reason the average user should have to make modprobe.d/radeon.conf with `option radeon si_support=0 cik_support=0` or modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf with `option amdgpu si_support=1 cik_support=1`, blocklist radeon and also ensure that the amdgpu module loads before radeon.
Why does this remain incomplete, what is needed to move it forward, and are there any volunteers to make it happen?https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2050Linux 5.19-rc2 amdgpu errors2022-11-03T16:54:06ZTorsten WohlfarthLinux 5.19-rc2 amdgpu errorsI test linux 5.19-rc2 today. 1st start ends on garbaged graphics as soon as x starts.
I am currently testing out https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/1154 and https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/merge_requests/734. VRR, however, is not working when my monitor is connected via DisplayPort through a Lenovo 40AY dock, but works perfectly fine when connecting the monitor to the laptop directly (USB-C to DP cable).
The #gnome-shell irc asked me to report that issue here.
## Hardware description:
## How to reproduce the issue:
Simply connect the monitor to the laptop (once through the dock and once directly) and see whether VRR is available.
This happens with Games using that use the Vulkan API. When it happens, the Display freezes for a couple of seconds and then freezes with the last frame, but with heavy artifacts.
I believe this is a regression, because downgrading my kernel to version 5.16 resolves this issue.
