fix an issue reported by Coverity (which fixes a previous issues fixed there, 02dbba49).

Also, try to cleanup the code a bit.

But I think it's still very ugly (to read one byte at a time) and I think it's also not correct as is. That might be changed later.

while the MR was open (and before it got eventually merged), it got more commits. These commits were all related to Coverity warnings from internal RHEL build NetworkManager-1.32.0-0.4.el8 (see also https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1938672)
