Consider enhancing NetworkManager with NIC alternative names
The kernel supports alternative names for network interfaces. It would be interesting if we could take advantage of this in some way within NetworkManager. For example if a user were to specify a name that was unique (like enx5254009110fa
) but the system didn't actually have that naming scheme in place (i.e. it used eth0
, or ens2
) instead, we could logically deduce the correct interface and do the right thing anyway.
These are just some thoughts as I stumbled on the fact that they exist yesterday and wondered if we could take advantage of them.
